Tips for Thrifting Your Halloween Decor 😊

Hi Friends,

If you know me, you know I LOVE Halloween. If you stop into the shop this month you can expect a large spooky display and sense of excitement for the holiday to come.

Although we do stock the store with seasonal Day of the Dead and Halloween décor, there aren’t always a ton of Fair Trade options if you are wanting to give your home a full holiday experience.

One of the 10 principles of Fair Trade is Cultivate Enviromental Stewardship, which includes reducing waste, using eco-friendly products and considering the environmental impact when problem solving.

Keeping in mind Cultivate Enviromental Stewardship, I wanted to share some of my favorite tips for thrifting fantastic Halloween décor at a fraction of the price and without buying into a plastic-heavy market of mass-produced goods.

Items to thrift for any how to use them:

  1. Any Black Fabric: cover any table, drape it over furniture, swoop it across the ceiling. Whether it is a lacy shawl, a tablecloth, or even a sheet, black fabric creates the perfect base for all of your Halloween décor!

  1. Mirrors: write a spooky message, glue on a ghost, smash it a little for a cracked look.

  1. Old Paintings: add ghosts and a cemetery to a landscape painting or unnatural eyes/wounds to a portrait. Use your creativity and imagination!

  1. Dolls and Figurines: use various crafting methods like painting, redressing, or manipulation of the figure to create a haunting sight. Examples: coloring hair and adding a costume to turn a life-size barbie into a witch, painting a porcelain doll as a zombie, or putting a dismembered doll pieces in jars.

  1. Items To Spray Paint Black: artificial bouquets, candle sticks, picture frames..

The options really are endless!

Happy Haunting!

-Hannah

P.S. Thrifted or handmade costumes are also always a great option! Not only are they better for the planet, they also allow for more creativity, and generally use better quality fabric so they can be repurposed for more costumes in the future!
