Happy World Book Day!
Store manager Hannah here to shout out about my love of books and encourage you to support literacy communities- now more than ever!
In recent years, there has been a push to ban books by and about minorities throughout the country in an effort to eliminate diverse voices and whitewash history.
Last month, the new administration eliminated ALL federal library funding, which will significantly reduce programming for all ages. This is especially harmful as we enter the summer months, where library programming can prevent the Summer Slide, a phenomenon where children lose significant reading skills over the summer if they don't stay engaged in literacy and learning.
Over half of this reading achievement gap is attributable to unequal access to summer learning opportunities. A gap that libraries fill through on-site programming and off-site outreach, often including book distribution to underprivileged areas.
In summary, today (and every day) is a great day to support your local library and other literacy programs!
Here are some awesome organizations in Lexington where you can donate time, money, or just get involved in their phenomenal programming!
The Lexington Public Library: We are lucky to have an AMAZING library system with in-person and digital programming and resources for all ages, encouraging life-long learning! Check out their calendar of events or explore volunteer opportunities.
Friends of the Library: In the basement of the downtown library is a used bookstore whose sales are donated back to the Lexington library system to provide funding for all of the amazing events and programming the libraries put together. I personally volunteer with Friends of the Library, where I love seeing what unique books are donated, and then organizing, pricing and putting them on the shelves :) You can find out more about this great organization here.
The Carnegie Center: Lexington's Literacy Headquarters- this organization connects readers and writers of all ages! From summer camps for kids, adult writing events, and readings from established authors, The Carnegie Center has something for everyone! I have also volunteered here as a reading tutor and had an amazing time! Explore all they have to offer here.
International Book Project: A Lexington non-profit that partners with underserved communities and literacy programs throughout Kentucky, the country, and the globe to provide books to those in need. They also have a bookstore where you can purchase books to support their mission, or you can volunteer! Learn more about them here.
